WINTER PARK — Pine Forest had the relays down pat.

A trio of victories — the 4x800, the 4x400 and the 4x100 — sparked the Eagles' girls track team to a second-place finish during the Class 3A track and field championships in Winter Haven on Friday.

After winning the 4x800 to start the meet, the Eagles then won the 4x100 and capped their day by coming from behind to win the 4x400.

"I've been coaching for 14 years and never walked out of there with that many first places. I've never seen a team sweep all the relays," Pine Forest coach Paul Bryan said. "They did great. They were very disappointed because they wanted to win the whole thing It wasn't our day to win it. But, we're No. 2 in the state, we'll take it and we'll be back next year."

The 4x400 was the most dramatic.

The Eagles got tangled behind some other runners in an early handoff and trailed going into the final lap. Dacia Mays then put on a sterling effort to lead her team from behind to the victory.
