Trusting the Process on the Road to State
By Kayla Easterly for DyeStat.com
Hey DyeStat.com runners! As we're reaching mid-to-end season for racing I think we all can relate to having doubts and multiple frustrating runs. About this time is when workouts start getting significantly harder and racing is at full intensity, making our bodies more rundown and fatigued. This is usually when I start questioning my capabilities, and getting through workouts becomes more than just a physical barrier. However, each season I always have to remind myself to trust the process and have faith in my own running abilities. Previously I ran at FSU Relays and took 22 seconds off my PR in the 2-mile. In the events leading up to the two mile, my coach texted me my splits and told me she planned for me to run a 20-25 second PR. This of course blew my mind and seemed unrealistic, but instead of focusing on the large time jump, I broke the run down and fixated on competing. A large part of maturing as a runner for me was trusting my coach. I think every athlete undermines his or her potential, and relying on your coach to see your true talent is essential to progressing. I constantly have moments where I think my coach is insane when she gives me workout and race splits, but in the end when I trust her methods I end up performing to her standards. It's also essential to go into each run with an optimistic mindset. Whenever I doubt my capabilities, or become too frustrated with a workout I don't perform well. My coach has made it a habit to go into a workout or race with the "I can do it" mindset, and it makes the biggest difference in outcomes. Of course you're going to be fatigued and tired during races, as is everyone else on the track, but it's important to remind yourself of all the hard work you put in! In order to achieve your goals and progress, remember to always stay positive and trust the process! Having faith in your coach and your own abilities is so essential to PR’ing and enjoying racing. I hope everyone runs hard and finishes out their season strong! Kayla by the numbers: T&F 400m – 1:02.22 800m – 2:20.13 1600m – 5:03.30 3200m – 10:54.26
